Can alternative medicine for Parkinsons disease be effective?
It is true that medical practitioners relying on western techniques are fairly skeptical of alternative therapies. They prefer Parkinson's disease treatment using conventional techniques. However, it is interesting to note that many insurance companies are willing to cover costs for alternative medicine and complementary therapies. This is testimony to their possible effectiveness, at least for some people. Ayurveda Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system, is probably the oldest medical system devised by mankind and seems to be at least 5000 years old. It contains descriptions of diseases very similar to Parkinson's. Many patients have reported that ayurveda treatment helped contain the symptoms. The process includes detoxification followed by various therapies to balance the body's systems. It may also include yoga and meditation. Using antioxidant supplements Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals in the human body and thus reduce cell death. There are some studies that show that taking Coenzyme Q10 does of around 1200 mg each day slows the progression of this disease. Other studies have focused on Vitamin E to control Parkinson's, although there is no clear evidence (so far) that it helps. Eating a nutritious, well-balanced diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, etc may protect the brain to some extent. In any case, people relying on a healthy diet tend to feel better, so that would certainly help. Intelligent food intake Parkinson's disease is often treated with L-dopa, for symptomatic relief. Some studies show that high levels of protein in the diet can interfere with the effectiveness of L-dopa. You will need to work with your doctor to devise a sensible diet that suits your conditions. Patients often complain about feeling full after eating just a little. This is due to Parkinson's affecting the muscles of the digestive tract. Nutritionists have suggested that high fiber diets can help those with Parkinson's. So can taking smaller meals more frequently. Herbal medicines There are herbal medicines that can treat many of the symptoms of Parkinson's. A good herbalist may be able to prescribe them. However, many herbal medicines / supplements can interfere with other conventional drugs you may be on. So if you plan on taking these medicines, be sure to keep your doctor fully informed about it. One or more of these systems of alternative medicine for Parkinson's disease may perhaps be right for you. Here's another. Yoga Yoga is a traditional Indian system that counsels a balanced, integrated lifestyle. Yoga exercises can help maintain balance and posture, both of which can be affected by Parkinson's. These exercises do not involve strenuous or vigorous movements and so may be well suited to many seniors who find it difficult to transition from a sedentary lifestyle to a more physically active one. Like yoga, Chinese Tai Chi exercises may help maintain strength, balance and flexibility.
