The real dangers of high blood pressure
There is a good chance that this so called silent killer could be present in someone in your family. Scary, isn't it? There is no one specific cause for this condition. Without actually measuring it, there is no way to tell if you or another family member has it. You can't go by symptoms like headaches, dizziness, etc because many other conditions may also cause those problems. A reading of around 120/80 is considered normal. If someone has 140/90, for instance, it is considered high. Once you have been diagnosed with high pressure, you will need to be cautious about it throughout your life. High b.p. is considered a primary attack if it is caused either by body problems / dysfunction or by stress, high cholesterol, anxiety, etc. It is considered a secondary attack if it is caused by another medial problem or because of taking specific medications, etc. Make no mistake about it -- the effects of high blood pressure include crippling a person's normal functioning forever. It can affect any part of the body, right down to the tiniest vein in the most obscure place. Here is what can happen within your brain and heart, for example. If blood pressure affects the veins within the brain, it may result in one or both sides of the body being paralysed. Good diet, physical therapy and drugs can help recovery, but that depends on the age of the person. In any case, it will take time. There is a possibility of the veins rupturing due to pressure. If that happens, internal haemorrhage can result and it may require surgery. Unfortunately, surgery can't guarantee a cure or even survival. High pressure in the brain can result in slurred speech, a disfigured face, paralysis, involuntary movements and more. Excessive blood pressure can lead to cardiac arrest -- this is a well-known situation. An attack is an emergency condition and needs immediate medical attention. If the heart doesn't pump blood adequately, gangrene can result in the limbs and may even necessitate amputation. Making lifestyle changes, healthy diet, regular exercise and a positive mental orientation can go a long way towards avoiding the dangers of high blood pressure. Given the severe effects of the condition, it's a small price to pay.
