Unearthing Parkinson's causes
The link between dopamine and Parkinson's disease
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that facilitates the brain's communications
within itself and with other body organs. In some people, dopamine production
slows down considerably because the cells which produce it begin dying. The real
reasons for the death of cells in the group called substantia nigra (which is
responsible for dopamine production) is not known. That's another way of saying
that we do not have a full picture of how and why Parkinson's disease develops
in the first place.
Recent information about Parkinson's disease
It is generally known that Parkinson's disease tends to affect older people more
than younger ones. However, age is not the only factor involved; genetics may
play a role too, along with other factors. This is true even though
approximately 90% of Parkinson's cases diagnosed are in those above age 60. And
the risk tends to increase with age, except for one surprising statistic.
