Watching an asthma attack video might be a good way to understand exactly what an attack is. Unless you are an asthma patient yourself or have seen someone having an attack, you probably won't actually know what it looks like.

Well, imagine being unable to breathe all of a sudden. What would it feel like if your very source of life-giving oxygen were abruptly shut off (to a great extent, anyway)?

That's what it feels like to a patient who's having a severe attack of asthma.

If you were to be present at that time, you might observe the patient becoming short of breath, even though she might not be exerting herself (some kinds of asthma occur during physical exertion too). She may start wheezing as well, and that continues for a while.

Her breath may come in short, shallow gasps.

She may also have what seems like an irritating chough and it can get worse over time (particularly at night).

If the attack is severe enough, her skin may show a bluish tinge, from lack of sufficient oxygen. Her ability to speak may become impaired or she may even be unable to speak altogether.

It can be a truly frightening spectacle.

Watch this asthma attack video (opens in new window; after watching, close that window to come back here) to see what it looks like. This clip does not depict an extremely severe attack, but the difficulty in breathing does come through.

Prevention (avoiding allergens, avoiding exercising in cold weather, using prescribed medication regularly and so on) is critical in managing asthma. The only positive side of this disease is that in a majority of cases, it responds well to medication.

By the way, if you thought only human beings are susceptible to asthma, think again. See this asthma attack video of a cat having an attack (again, opens in new window.)
