Vitamin E Treatment in Alzheimer's Disease; Facts On Commonly Used Medication
Apart from commonly used drugs (described later), there is plenty of research going on to discover newer, more effective medication. Vitamin E treatment in Alzheimer's disease is one such example. Despite some talk about its usefulness, there is no conclusive evidence so far. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are another treatment that is being explored. They seem to offer some protection, but again, there is nothing conclusive. The female hormone, estrogen, is another potential candidate in Alzheimer's disease and treatment. Some studies show that estrogen combined with another hormone progestin can reduce the chances of Alzheimer's developing. However, this combination of hormones tends to raise the risks of cardiovascular problems like strokes. Hence it is not recommended. There's a plant extract called ginkgo biloba, which is supposed to improve brain function. Unfortunately, it has been found to have serious side effects, despite its mild effectiveness in treating the disease. Currently, the most commonly used drugs in Alzheimer's disease treatment revolve around enhancing levels of a chemical called acetylcholine. This is a key ingredient for the normal functioning of brain neurons; Alzheimer's patients have low levels of acetylcholine. Today's drugs like Exelon, Aricept, etc inhibit the production of an enzyme called Acetylcholinesterase which reduces the levels of acetylcholine. Despite these drugs being in use, there is plenty of debate about how effective they really are. In addition, these drugs have unpleasant side effects like vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, etc. To contain these problems, the drugs are administered in small doses at first and increased gradually over time. Some studies reveal that cognitive impairment is delayed by around a year in about 20% of patients taking these drugs. For the present, the cause of Alzheimer's is unknown, and so is the cure. Scientists continue to experiment with Vitamin E treatment in Alzheimer's disease and other possible remedies..
